Pilates is a non-aerobic progressive exercise therapy for improving stability of the spine through toning of the deep pelvic muscles, and a general body conditioning program.

It is an exercise tool that needs skilful handling. Gyms for example tend to load up the arms and legs first in their programs and any old thing can be happening in the tummy and lower back.

Recently there has been some bad press about patient symptoms being made worse by undertaking a Pilates program. This is a result of many lesser-qualified instructors setting up classes in response to public demand and using exercise indiscriminately with little ability to prescribe appropriately. Pilates is not the panacea for all ills, it is an exercise tool that needs skilful handling, and as a result, all staff in this physiotherapy practice are accredited Pilates instructors.

As a physiotherapist and musculo-skeletal specialist, myself and my team are skilled in the prescription, implementation and adaptation of appropriate exercise therapy for patients with motor control dysfunction.

Initial Physiotherapy Assessment is essential to find out what your needs are and how best to address them. Questions are asked to determine what type of dysfunction/problem is present.

For example:

  • why is there pain
  • is there a limp – and why
  • is there a fear of movement due to pain and stiffness
  • is there poor muscle tone causing poor posture leading to pain

An appropriate management plan is then determined for each patient, whether that is by individual consultation/treatment, shared consultation or group sessions. Therefore every patient receives customized individual service.
